When torturing scientists it is better to use chess and unsolvable problems then waterboarding and finger smashing.
During WWII, the US government understood the need to get German scientists and engineers before anyone else did, so we could use their tech and knowledge to advance our own. Maybe I’m being old and bitter, but it seems like nowdays no such thing would happen. I would be easier to capture, and torture them for some knowledge, then shoot ‘em.

I would imagine the best course would be to treat the asset(s) well, and threaten their family. If they turn, citizenship for ‘em.
